If any body would like to volunteer some time to help me run the squad please do get in touch. |
Team Manager needed To liaise with opposition squads, the boys and their parents regarding help with catering for home games and so on. |
Game Reporter Someone that can come to most games and then write a short match report on the web site and possibly put any pictures taken on . Analyst/Tackle Spotters Any parent at any of the games could do this. I’ll print off some sheets with team numbers on then it’s just a case of ticking boxes when a tackle is made or missed, ball carries, etc. All of your support and help would be very much appreciated from the entire squad – thank you in advance….. |

Sunday 3rd April 2011 Didsbury Toc H RFC u16’s 23 - Ruthin u16’s 31 Ruthin travelled away for the return match against Didsbury with 13 players on a bright but showery spring morning. Having lost Ryan Roberts to a soft tissue injury to his thigh in last week’s meeting and still missing Matt Jepson and Morgan Owen, but happily seeing the return of Harri Williams. Ruthin took to the field with 15 players, Sam and Ed stepping forward from Toc H to take up positions on left wing and blind side flanker, respectively, and to their credit they stayed with us for the whole game and gave their all in both defence and attack, with passion. From the start it was a close battle, Didsbury taking the first points with a penalty for hands in. Ruthin realised that Didsbury were not just there to make up the numbers. After gaining possession following some loose handling by the opposition together with some good forward work, the ball was put through the hands to Ryan Williams, who, with his dancing feet, had some work to do to run one in through the line from just outside the 22. Ciran was successful with the extras. The game ebbed and flowed from end to end with Ruthin unable to control their own line outs, although they did cause grief for Toc H on theirs. Ruthin also found it difficult to deal with Didsbury’s rucking power or the strength of their mauling. Ruthin were unfortunate in giving away penalties at the break down and Didsbury repeatedly kicked into touch. Toc H’s handling in the open continued to give Ruthin chances which, due to a lack of support and weak rucking, was then turned back over to Didsbury who were the next to score a try but failed to convert; 8 -7. Again Toc ticked sooner and powered up centre field then ran up the left wing for another unconverted try. Some great ball control and interplay by all the forwards notably Twm Jonathan, Harri Williams, James Jackson, George Evans supported by Patrick Roberts, Kieran Ward and Tom Miles saw the lads work their way up the centre of the field to gain just outside 22 where James broke right and secured the ball for Ryan who backed his pace to run another in 5m in from touch. Ciran just missed the conversion, ending the half at 13-12 to Didsbury. Some strong words at the half time talk were meant to wake a sleepy Ruthin team from their lethargy but Didsbury came out the stronger scoring a well deserved try but unfortunately they failed to convert. At this point, fast approaching the final quarter of the game, Ruthin woke up and a combination of good handling in the backs and better support for the ball carrier by the forwards saw them have their best spell of the game. Alex Penfold was again outstanding, both in defence and attack. James got his first try of the day, Bryn was unlucky to have his try called back for a penalty, he was called for tripping his opposite number, although chasing after the ball that he had chipped through. With sustained pressure from the squad another try came for Ciran from a great run through a now tiring defence. He took the conversion himself, even though he slipped over while taking the kick. Ruthin kept the pressure up from the kick and were soon camped in Didsbury’s 22 and after a few drives and some great hands, James dabbed down for a second try in the corner with Cameron getting the extras. 31 - 18 to Ruthin with just 5 minutes left on the clock. Didsbury weren’t finished though after the kick. Ruthin were again penalised for not releasing the ball at the ruck and Toc H took it quickly to get another 10m when they kicked to touch, a good line out take and drive all the way to the line soon got them a well deserved try in the corner. Try’s Ryan Williams 2, James Jackson 2, Ciran Jones 1 plus 2 Conversions and Cameron Hassett got 1 conversion. Team Twm Jonathan, Patrick Roberts, Kieran Owen, Tom Miles, George Evans, Harri Williams, James Jackson, Alex Penfold, Danny Miller, Cameron Hassett, Bryn Sheppard, Ryan Williams, Ciran Jones |

Sunday 27th March 2011 Ruthin U 16’s 24 – 7 Didsbury Toc H U 16’s Short of numbers yet again, Ruthin were only able to field 13 players for today’s fixture against a full sized Didsbury crew with Harri Williams, Morgan Owen and Matt Jepson still unable to play due to injury. Numbers were reduced once again during the second half as Ryan Roberts sustained an injury to the hip and was forced to retire from the match. Here’s hoping for a speedy recovery to all four! 15 minutes in, after a period of pressure by Ruthin, a poor clearance kick from the Didsbury line was collected by man-of-the-match Alex Penfold for an easy try. A rushed kick by Bryn Sheppard missed the posts. Several incisive runs by the Ruthin backs into Didsbury territory, especially by Cameron Hassett, Bryn Sheppard and Ryan Roberts, failed to result in adding to the score sheet through lack of support. The second Ruthin try came from a superb offload by Ryan Roberts to Alex who again touched down under the posts, Bryn taking the extra 2 points. Ruthin continued to defend well against some powerful Didsbury runs and a clever chip through saw Cameron Hassett beat the Didsbury fullback in the chase for the ball which Cameron skilfully collected at full pace and ran in under the posts. Bryn’s conversion attempt bounced off the posts. Soon after, the whistle blew for half-time with Ruthin 17 – 0 ahead. The second half saw Didsbury come back strongly and, after a good line-out win, Didsbury set up an effective maul resulting in a well worked try, No. 10 adding the extra 2 points. Ryan Roberts took a hard knock to the hip after putting in a series of hard tackles and had to leave the field. Didsbury took a player off to keep the numbers even at 12-a-side. Ruthin conceded far too many penalties in the second half, forcing some fierce defence to keep Didsbury off the line. In the final quarter Ruthin concede a scrum in the Didsbury half and managed to poach one against the head. Alex snaffled the ball and span it out, eventually finding Cameron who ran in for his second try of the game which he then converted. Didsbury dominated in the set pieces, especially the scrum and line-out but some poor handling coupled with great Ruthin defence and counter-attack, gave Ruthin a justified win. Final score; Ruthin 24, Didsbury Toc H 7. Squad: Twm Jonathan, Patrick Roberts, Kieran Ward, George Evans, Tom Miles, James Jackson, Alex Penfold, Danny Miller, Cameron Hassett, Ryan Roberts, Bryn Sheppard (C), Ryan Williams, Ciran Jones ![]() |

Sunday 20th March 2011 Ruthin U 16’s 31 – 17 Crewe & Nantwich U 16’s Short of numbers yet again, Ruthin were only able to field 12 players for Sunday’s fixture against Crewe and Nantwich with Harri Williams, still carrying a leg injury from last week’s game opting not to play. Despite reduced numbers Ruthin were first on the score-sheet with a fine Cameron Hassett try crossing the line in the first 5 minutes, duly converted by Bryn Sheppard. Crewe wasted no time in responding with strong running and good combining in the backs allowing them to cross the line shortly afterwards for an unconverted try. Captain Morgan Owen sustained a wrist injury and was replaced by Harri Williams who, despite carrying an injury, had a super game. The Crewe try set the scene for the first half with both teams evenly matched. Strong pressure from both sides forced a lot of handling errors but it was Ruthin who managed to settle quicker and gain that all-important composure. A try from man-of-the-match Alex Penfold, converted by Bryn saw the home team stretch the lead. Crewe again responded well and crossed the whitewash to take the half-time score to 14 – 12 to Ruthin. The second half saw a perfect start for Ruthin when five minutes in, Alex took quick tap penalty on the Crewe 5 metre line, spotted a gap and dived over close to the posts. Bryn adding the 2 points. Once again, Crewe responded in style and soon closed the gap with another unconverted try. A period of intense play by both teams saw the game move back and forth from one 22 to the other. Ryan Williams finally getting a break and running in from just inside the opposition’s half to score in the corner. Ruthin camped in Crewe’s 22 for the next 10 minutes and a fumbled clearance kick was collected by Ryan Roberts for an easy score under the posts, Bryn’s conversion attempt bouncing off the upright. Ruthin played some of the best rugby this season in today’s match with massive credit to the front row of Twm Jonathan, Patrick Roberts and Kieran Ward. Also strong were Ryan Roberts and Bryn Sheppard on the centre. Squad: Twm Jonathan, Patrick Roberts, Kieran Ward, George Evans, Morgan Owen (C), Harri Williams, James Jackson, Alex Penfold, Danny Miller, Ryan Roberts, Bryn Shepperd, Cameron Hassett, Ryan Williams ![]() |

Sunday 6th March 2011 Ruthin U 16’s 74 – 17 Caernarfon U 16’s From the 16-man squad, Fifteen Ruthin players turned up on Sunday but only fourteen were fit to play. A nasty injury in training on Tuesday night has brought Matt Jepson’s season to an early end with a badly broken ankle. His moral support obviously was of benefit though! Jo Woolford was unable to attend Due to family commitments. As Caernarfon dismounted from the coach the Ruthin squad all commented on their size. The team talk in the changing rooms from Captain Morgan Owen before kick-off was all focussed on defence and how to close down the huge Caernarfon forwards. Ruthin’s concerns soon proved unfounded as an early opening try from Ruthin exposed Caernarfon’s weak defence. Great work by the Ruthin pack in facing up to their much larger opponents delivered quality ball to the backs time and again. Going into contact in possession, the Ruthin pack laid the ball back quickly and effectively with good rucking. This allowed fast recycling to Alex Penfold at No. 9 who found his form again after a rough patch. Distribution by Danny Miller at 10 allowed both Ryan Roberts and Bryn Shepperd in the centre to cut scything runs through the Caernarfon back line and it felt like every time Ruthin got behind their defence another try was on the cards. Ryan Williams as a roving full-back also made some strong runs to get behind Caernarfon. Caernarfon’s tries all came from silly mistakes, by Ruthin in their own half, which allowed the big Cofis pack to rumble over the line. Caernarfon passed up several chances in attack by keeping the ball in the forwards and ignoring their No. 10 who was screaming for possession. Great defence from Ruthin squashed most of these opportunities which was then quickly turned into great counter attacks. Man-of-the-Match James Jackson, in only his second appearance for Ruthin, ran in a fantastic total of four tries. Other names on the scoreboard were Danny Miller and Bryn Shepherd (one try each), Ryan Roberts, Ryan Williams and Cameron Hassett (two tries a-piece) and conversions were shared one to Morgan, two to Danny and four to Bryn. All in all, an effective Ruthin squad capitalised on a poor defensive effort from Caernarfon. ![]() The Full Squad: Twm Jonathan, Patrick Roberts, Kieran Ward, Tom Miles, George Evans, Morgan Owen (C), Harri Williams, James Jackson, Alex Penfold, Danny Miller, Ryan Roberts, Bryn Shepperd, Cameron Hassett, Ryan Williams, Matt Jepson, Jo Woolford |

Sunday 16th January 2011 Oswestry U16’s 22 - Ruthin U16’s 17 The first game since the end of November saw Ruthin travel to a wet and muddy Oswestry. Numbers yet again were a problem for Ruthin with ten players turning up on the day. Oswestry, with a much bigger squad, kindly volunteered six players, three for each half, making a good game of thirteen-a-side. Thanks to all six who put in sterling performances for the opposition and added to both sides’ enjoyment of the game. The conditions meant a lot was asked of the forwards with aggressive rucking, mauling and scrumming on both sides. The first score went Ruthin’s way when a good break allowed Ryan Williams to cross the line with Danny Miller adding the two points from the boot. However this lead did not last long. Following some good work by the Oswestry pack and lack-lustre defence by Ruthin, the home team scored in the corner but failed to convert. Oswestry came back strongly, securing ball effectively from the breakdown with some great rucking and recycling. This pressure soon became points with another unconverted try to the home team. With the score at 10 – 7 to Oswestry and the game still very much up for grabs, Ruthin responded with a period of pressure on the home team’s try-line where, despite several decisions going against them, territory and possession remained in Ruthin’s favour. Eventually this sustained pressure paid dividends and a scramble over the Oswestry line saw Twm Jonathan drop on the ball to claim the five points giving Ruthin a two point lead at the half way mark. The conditions really started to take their toll in the second half with mud making the going tough and rain turning the ball into a bar of soap. Matt Jepson and Kieran Ward were soon unrecognisable after the huge tackles both put in. Alex Penfold, bravely struggling against a heavy cold but determined to stay on the field, asked to be moved from scrum-half to the wing which gave Ryan Williams his first go at Number 9. Following a ruck near the right wing, Danny Miller spotted a gap on the other side of the field. A clever chip was skilfully collected by Alex Penfold who offloaded to Bryn Sheppard. Bryn then grub-kicked through the defence to collect and score in the corner. The restart saw Oswestry come back strongly and, despite some great defence, the home team soon levelled the score at 17-all. Fitness levels started to show as the mud and rain continued to cause problems. Oswestry coped better though with good retention by the forwards. Minutes before the final whistle Oswestry got the all-important break and crossed Ruthin’s line to make the final score 22 – 17 to the hosts. Spectators enjoyed an evenly matched contest resulting in a score-line close enough to reward the efforts of both teams. Squad: Twm Jonathan, Tom Miles, Kieran Ward, Morgan Owen (C), Matthew Jepson, Alex Penfold, Danny Miller, Bryn Sheppard, Cameron Hassett, Ryan Williams Man-of-the-Match: Twm Jonathan |

Sunday 14th November 2010 Wrexham U 16’s 40 – 7 Ruthin U 16’s Short of 1 player, 14 Ruthin men travelled to Wrexham for what we knew would be our toughest test so far this season, and so it turned out. Adding to our problems, Patrick Roberts pulled a hamstring during the pre-match warm-up so Tom Miles stepped in as hooker and Wrexham offered 2 more players to make up the numbers – a big thanks to Hussein and Neil in the first half and then James, who swapped for Hussein in the second. All 3 gave 100%. All there would agree the score-line did not do justice to the gutsy performance Ruthin put on against a big Wrexham squad, littered with North Wales players. Ruthin’s organisation was very evident, both in attack and defence with an excellent defensive line keeping the score a reasonable 21 nil at half time. The first 15 minutes of the second half saw Ruthin play their best rugby so far this season with stalwart, aggressive defence keeping Wrexham at bay. Pick and drive from the fringes of the ruck proved effective at drawing in the opposition defence before quick recycling and moving down the line allowed the combination of Ryan Roberts and Bryn Sheppard to keep punching into the Wrexham mid-field. A series of crash ball moves worked brilliantly - fast ball from Alex Penfold at the breakdown was cleared to Danny Miller then quickly fed back inside to Matt Jepson coming on the burst at real pace. One of these text-book moves saw Alex recycle a second time to Danny who flicked the ball to Cameron Hassett on the wing running the perfect angle to slice through the Wrexham defence to score near the posts. Danny slotted the extra 2 points. All worked hard with good performances in the pack from captain, Morgan Owen in the line-out, stealing at least 3 from Wrexham, Tomos Jones and Kieran Ward making the hard yards and Harri Williams, Matt Jepson and Jo Woolford putting their bodies on the line time and again in defence. Alex Penfold made a nuisance of himself around the scrums and breakdowns whilst Ryan Williams stood firm at fullback taking the high ball with confidence and repeatedly carrying back over the gain-line. Every player stepped up to the line today, giving 100% for the full hour. Despite the score, this was a performance Ruthin can come away from with heads held high and pride in their individual performances and in their team-mates. It is games like this that mould a team into an effective unit, committed and working with and for each other. Squad: Tom Jones, Patrick Roberts, Tom Miles, Kieran Ward, Jo Woolford, Harri Williams, Morgan Owen (C), Matthew Jepson, Alex Penfold, Danny Miller, Ryan Roberts, Bryn Sheppard, Cameron Hassett, Ryan Williams Man-of-the-Match: Ryan Roberts |

Sunday 7th November 2010 Bala U 16’s 10 – 22 Ruthin U 16’s Ruthin took a full 15 to Bala on Sunday, the first fixture between the two squads since formation. However, shortly after starting, a Bala player left the field injured so Ruthin conceded a player to keep numbers even. Shortly after that Bala crossed the line for the first points after some good forward play resulted in a try in the far corner which Bala failed to convert from a drop-kick. Ruthin responded with some strong running in mid-field with Ryan Roberts and Ryan Williams combining well to test the Bala defence. A break down the wing and a cut inside from Cameron Hassett set up scrum-half Alex Penfold for a darting run to score near the posts. A sliced kick meant the 2 points went astray. The score stayed at 5 all for a time with both sets of backs penetrating deep into each others halves, only stopped by some excellent defence. Inevitably one of these runs would result in points and luckily for Ruthin it went their way just before half time after another good break allowed Ryan Williams to cross the line. Again the conversion didn’t come. Leading 10 - 5, Ruthin came out for the second half with more composure than earlier with some fine forward work by Tom Miles, Harri Williams and new player Kieran Ward allowing Ryan Roberts and Bryn Sheppard to stretch the Bala mid-field defence. Bryn soon added his name to the scoreboard after a 15 metre driving maul from the determined Ruthin pack, Danny Miller getting the 2 extra points. Ruthin weathered some strong attacking play by Bala and, five minutes before the final whistle, Bryn Sheppard added to his previous score with another good try. Final score, Bala 10, Ruthin 22. ![]() Squad, Back row from left: Tom Jones, Bryn Shepperd, Patrick Roberts, Harri Williams, Morgan Owen (C), Jo Woolford, Matthew Jepson, Kieran Ward, Twm Jonathan Front row: Danny Miller, Ryan Roberts, Alex Penfold, Tom Miles, Cameron Hassett, Ryan Williams Man-of-the-Match: Kieran Ward |

Sunday 24th October 2010 By Mark Jepson Ruthin U 16’s 48 – 0 Oswestry U 16’s
A comfortable and well deserved victory will go a long way to boost the confidence of this newly reformed Ruthin squad.
Only having 11 players from Ruthin, Oswestry, who had 17, kindly volunteered 3 of their players to join the home team providing a 14-a-side start. However, a blood injury in the early stages meant one of the Oswestry players retired so Ruthin released one of their players to bring the teams to 13 each. Ruthin proved dominant in open play with several runs cutting deep into Oswestry territory and it was inevitable that one of these would lead to a score by Ryan Williams, showing decisive and skilful running. A breakdown close to the Oswestry try line was well presented giving Matt Jepson a 5 metre surge over the line close to the posts which was easily converted. Oswestry showed some good close-in work with very effective scrummaging and rucking often resulting in turn-over ball but poor handling in the centres, combined with some fearsome defensive tackling by Ruthin, forced too many handling errors by the away team which Ruthin willingly converted into points. Worthy of note in the Ruthin squad are Matt Jepson for keeping the tackle count high, Alex Penfold for making the opposition scrum-half’s day a misery, Harri Williams for some excellent breaks and strong tackling and Ryan Williams for running in a hat-trick of tries and then generously popping the ball to Patrick Roberts to cross the line under the posts after an excellent break and chip forward by Bryn Sheppard which Bryn himself then gathered and offloaded perfectly to Ryan. One of the final scores of the day was from an Oswestry player in a Ruthin shirt, playing his first ever competitive game of rugby – a sign of good things to come for Oswestry. Try Count: Ciran Jones (1), 2 Oswestry player’s (1try each), Ryan Williams (3), Matt Jepson (1), Patrick Roberts (1). Conversions: Ciran Jones (2), Bryn Sheppard (1), Ryan Williams (1). Man-of-the-Match: Ryan Williams Match Report From Rhyl 31 V Ruthin/Shotton 7 3rd October 2010 This then woke the Rhyl team up and they turned up the heat. Even with all the valiant efforts in defence, in what was left of the mid 20, Rhyl took control of the scoreboard. The final 20 saw more strong attacking play from Rhyl using their big runners to hit mid field, where Danny, playing 12, and the Shotton 13 Cai? who if they would of stood on each others shoulder wouldn’t of been as tall as the lads they were trying so hard to bring down, struggled to cope. But a strong cover defence and Rhyl’s poor Handling kept letting them down. Ruthin counter attacked several times and were unlucky not to get a penalty following, a kick and chase and spent quite some time in the Rhyl half. Some Huge tackles where put in notably from, the stand out man of the match, in my book, Matt “meltdown” Jepson at No8, the squad lost on the day but came off the field with their heads held high, knowing they had all, on a personal level, preformed outstandingly. Special mentions for their efforts have to be given to: Harri “terrier” Williams No 7, who took down everything coming his way by the ankles, an awesome first game for the squad. Twm “Mynydd” Jonathan, solid defence and great hands in the loose. Jo “sure hand” Woolford, safe under pressure and strong in defence. Alex “the ferret” Penfold, he goes in to the rucks and comes out on the other side with the ball, immense in every aspect of his game. The front row combo Tomos and Pat, what can I say, you stood strong, and tackled well. Last but not least Birthday Boy Tom “bad boy” Miles, was all over the park tackled everything and through some great support work in attack came so close to scoring a try on his big day. Before I end this, the first match report for the 16’s squad, I really do have to give some huge Kudos to the Shotton players both wings Aran & Leo? worked hard in defence and attack, Sir HRH your highness (you know who you are, I just don’t know how to spell it) was outstanding at 6 and Jake “the power” Griffiths, covered the ground like he had a v8 in the engine room and played out of his skin. And finally at outside centre a tiny mighty man who played with more heart than a bison with a bad head. It was an honour to join forces with the Shotton boy’s and if there is anyway we can help them, to keep playing Rugby, our door is always open for them to join us to train and play as a joint squad. |
